Description
Edvard Grieg’s hauntingly beautiful melody The Last Spring (Våren) is one of the pinnacles of Norwegian Romanticism. Transcribed for brass band by James Curnow, the piece focuses on the band’s ability to “sing” with a transparent and deeply emotional quality. Curnow’s setting respects Grieg’s original string-based orchestration, utilizing the warm, blended middle-brass voices to create a sense of yearning and Nordic melancholy. It is a breathtakingly beautiful choice for a lyrical or reflective moment in any program.
