W.C. Handy’s “The Father of the Blues” masterpiece, St. Louis Blues, is given a sophisticated Big Band style treatment by John Glenesk Mortimer. This arrangement weaves together the song’s famous blues melody with a Latin-inflected “habanera” section, just as Handy originally intended. Mortimer includes alternate bass clef Trombone parts, making it accessible for any ensemble. it is a fantastic stylistic showcase that allows the band to explore the roots of jazz with a professional, swinging sound.
