Mayenzeit is a fascinating set of seven variations by Kit Powell, based on a theme from the 13th century. The work takes an ancient medieval melody and subjects it to a variety of modern musical treatments, ranging from delicate and transparent textures to bold, full-ensemble statements. Powell’s variations explore different moods and colors, making the piece a journey through musical history through the lens of a contemporary brass band. It is an educational and highly interesting concert work for both players and listeners.
